Ryan's proposal 😍
It was late November 2019; November 27th to be exact. Ryan had planned to have us go holoholo around to Hilo since I was going to O'ahu for to help watch my cousins while their parents went to Vegas. I was totally unaware of the events that were about to unfold, I had just thought that he wanted to spend a day together before I leave, especially since we never have the same day off.
We started off late, traveling over to Hilo over Saddle Road. I had brought my camera to take some cool photos in the forest. I remember feeling a little jaded because we never stopped on the side hikes to go out and wander but it was dumping rain the entire drive. We ended up in Hilo on an overcast day, but it was nice to go to another town to cruise. We spent the day eating, shopping, and enjoying spending time with each other. Around dinner time we started our way back home up through lush saddle road. We initially had wanted to go stargazing, but at the time the stand for Mauna Kea was happening, so that access road was unavailable. I was fine just going back home but Ryan insisted that we go up to Mauna Loa.
The road was windy and I felt like I was in a Mars simulation driving through the misty fog, winding back and forth on a one-lane road that was hugged by dark, petrified lava and wistful long grass that blew in the breeze. The moon was mid in the heavens, a waxing crescent where the white of the moon was a mere sliver but I could still see the dark shadow of the dark side of the moon. Venus was high above the moon and there were another few stars that made a line between the moon and the horizon. It was really unique, I had never seen that before.
We arrived at the parking lot of the Mauna Loa visitor station when the white light was still peeking over the horizon, but it was about to fade into complete darkness. The weather was chilly, about 40 degrees due to wind chill and we were completely unprepared to stand there in the cold wind. There were about five other cars that were there, seeming to want to do the same thing, stargaze. Ryan and I would laugh and go back and forth between sitting in the car to get warm and then quickly getting out to stare at the setting moon and rising stars.
We stayed outside for a bit longer as it got darker and darker. We stood next to a white van that was protecting a Korean family and I could hear them chattering in their native tongue. Ryan then gave me a big bear hug and held me tight. He started whispering in my ear sweet nothings, like how much I mean to him and that he loves me so much. He started sniffling and I got the feeling that he was starting to tear up. He then started kneeling on the ground and said my full name. I remember just freaking out, saying "Are you fucking kidding me? You're kidding right? You faka!! No fucking way!" Mind you, it was super dark out so I didn't even see his face or the ring until we got back in the car. I loved that aspect though because it really was just about us feeling each other's vibes and excitement.
I was shouting from excitement and I am sure the Korean family was wondering what the hell was happening. We hugged, danced, laughed, and cried. We were so excited. I then laughed and told him that I hadn't even seen the ring yet! He put it on my finger in the dark but I didn't mind, we were just soaking each other up. The ring is merely symbolic and I was sure I would love it, so I didn't need to see it right away.
Once I got in the car, I took a look at the ring and fell in love immediately. It screamed me. He did so well with the choice. The ring he chose for me was a rectangular emerald with two triangle diamonds set on the sides. The base of the ring is 18k gold.
I had mentioned to Ryan on the drive-up that I got #6 for my numerology card for (today) and that card indicates that today is the day to focus on love. He later told me that he was cracking up at my reading, knowing secretly that he was about to pop the question and thus, my tarot and numerology card would ring true...quite literally! <3
